The 15th National Geothermal Conference opened in Beijing on May 22, 2025, under the theme “Geothermal + New Quality Productive Forces: Supporting Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality.” Concurrently, a national exhibition on geothermal energy and ground source heat pumps was held. This conference aims to showcase the latest achievements in China’s geothermal energy industry and discuss future development directions to promote the efficient and large-scale growth of the geothermal sector, thereby contributing to the dual carbon goals.
Geothermal energy is a vital component of China’s new energy landscape, characterized by abundant resources and significant development potential. Currently, geothermal energy plays an important role in heating, cooling, and reducing carbon emissions in modern agriculture and industry. However, Gui Xiaoyang, Deputy Director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Division of the National Energy Administration, pointed out that the development and utilization of geothermal energy still face numerous challenges. There is a pressing need for the industry to vigorously promote advanced technologies and actively drive project development.
China possesses rich geothermal resources, accounting for one-sixth of the global total, and has consistently ranked first in the world for direct geothermal utilization over the years. With ongoing technological advancements, the costs associated with geothermal heating are expected to decrease, enhancing its position in the future energy structure. Therefore, it is essential to continuously innovate in the exploration and utilization of geothermal energy to improve efficiency and economic value.
Additionally, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments have jointly issued the “Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development in the Heat Pump Industry,” which outlines a direction for the sustainable development of the heat pump sector. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has also released documents on urban renewal, emphasizing the need to meet ecological, green, low-carbon, and comfortable living requirements with the support of renewable energy sources like geothermal energy.
During the conference, Chen Yanhua, Chief Engineer of the China Academy of Building Research and Director of the Geothermal Industry Working Committee of the China Technical Supervision Information Association, stated that ground source heat pumps should be tailored to local conditions, considering the climate, economic levels, and residential habits. This scientific approach will ensure orderly utilization and development, aiding energy conservation and emission reduction.
Chen Zemin, Chairman of Wanjing New Energy Co., Ltd., shared his clean energy design philosophy and practices at the conference. Adhering to the principles of “drawing electricity from the sky, extracting heat from the ground, harnessing heat from thin air, and utilizing geotechnical energy storage,” he has developed the Wanjing Zero Carbon Energy Port, creating an innovative system for the multi-dimensional use of clean energy.
Several experts also delivered keynote speeches at the conference, collectively exploring the future of geothermal energy. This event has injected new momentum into the development of the geothermal industry and demonstrated China’s firm commitment and proactive actions towards achieving its dual carbon goals.
