2025 Sees Explosive Growth in Industrial and Commercial Energy Storage Projects
As we approach 2025, the industrial and commercial energy storage market is poised for significant growth. According to incomplete statistics from the CESA Energy Storage Applications Subcommittee’s industry database, as of May 20, 2025, the installed capacity of user-side industrial and commercial energy storage projects has reached 1.09 GW / 2.64 GWh. This growth is marked not only by an increase in the number of projects but also by a rise in project size, with a notable uptick in projects exceeding 100 MWh.
Since the beginning of 2025, a total of 37 projects with capacities of 100 MWh or more have been announced, totaling 3.35 GW / 9.04 GWh. Among these, four projects have been interconnected, with a capacity of 110.8 MW / 420.5 MWh, while six more are in the contracting, construction, or commencement phase, totaling 514.6 MW / 1129.2 MWh.
The newly established projects primarily cater to high energy-consuming sectors such as steel, chemicals, coal mining, and non-ferrous metal smelting. Furthermore, nine projects with capacities of 100 MWh or more have been awarded contracts this year, with a total capacity of 774.4 MW / 2122.29 MWh, and eighteen projects are currently in the bidding process, representing 1.95 GW / 5.37 GWh.
Geographically, these projects are predominantly concentrated in 15 provinces, with Jiangsu leading, accounting for over 40% of the total number. Other provinces like Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi, and Liaoning have also witnessed large-scale industrial and commercial energy storage projects being tendered.
Here are some typical examples of 100 MWh class industrial and commercial energy storage projects launched in 2025:
- Jiangsu Lianyungang Yaxin Steel Co., Ltd. – A 40 MW / 120 MWh energy storage project was completed in February 2025. This facility, located in the Guannan Port Industrial Area, is the largest single capacity user-side energy storage project in Lianyungang. It consists of several containerized lithium iron phosphate energy storage products and is designed to optimize power usage according to peak pricing policies, significantly improving operational efficiency and supply stability.
- Jiaozuo Dofu Dofu 100 MWh Energy Storage Station – Launched on March 10, this energy storage facility, located at the Dofu New Materials Co., Ltd. site in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, was built by Shenzhen Dofu Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. This project covers an area of 4100 m² with an investment of approximately 90 million yuan. It is expected to save the enterprise 25.08 million yuan annually in electricity costs.
- Zhengmei Group Yongyao 33.3 MW / 100 MWh Energy Storage Project – Successfully powered on March 20, this project serves as a significant step for Zhengmei Group in diversifying its energy resources. It provides a reliable power source for mining operations, enhancing economic electricity consumption through peak shaving.
- Hefei Tianeng Battery Base 37.5 MW / 100.5 MWh Energy Storage Station – Connected to the grid on May 10, this project aims to optimize the energy structure in Anhui Province and support national carbon reduction goals. It utilizes advanced lithium iron phosphate technology to effectively regulate electricity supply and demand.
- Sichuan Times 60 MW / 120 MWh Industrial User-Side Energy Storage Project – This project, which began on March 20, is the largest of its kind in Sichuan Province. It employs cutting-edge lithium iron phosphate batteries and an AI management system, enabling dynamic responses to grid demands.
- Huiran Industry 100 MW / 300 MWh Energy Storage Project – Initiated on March 20, this project aims to provide energy-saving solutions for Jiangsu Huiran Industry Co., Ltd., the largest nickel alloy manufacturer in the country. It is projected to contribute significantly to local renewable energy consumption and operational efficiency.
- Sunshine Yusheng Guangyue Chemical 75 MW / 150 MWh Energy Storage Station – Groundbreaking took place on March 28 in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province. This facility is expected to generate significant cost savings for the enterprise by utilizing advanced cooling technologies.
- Chengcheng Economic Development Zone 120 MWh User-Side Energy Storage Project – A signing ceremony was held on March 26 for this project that aims to cover around 60 enterprises in the region, focusing on those with high electricity loads and significant price differences between peak and off-peak hours.
These developments reflect a robust commitment to improving energy efficiency and supporting national sustainability goals.
