Experts Gather to Discuss Green Energy Development in Hydropower

On May 18, 2025, a major conference focusing on the integration of hydropower and wind energy was held in Chengdu, as part of the 28th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. This meeting, which bore the title “Water and Wind Energy Combined Infrastructure Construction,” saw participation from numerous specialists in hydropower and renewable energy.

The conference highlighted the importance of hydropower development in China’s energy transition strategy. The planned hydropower projects aim to achieve a total installed capacity of 780 million kilowatts, utilizing water resources from multiple rivers, including the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, to generate cleaner energy.

Currently, the installed capacity of existing hydropower facilities has reached approximately 210 million kilowatts, with new constructions in progress adding another 140 million kilowatts. These developments are expected to generate around 1 trillion kilowatt-hours annually, significantly contributing to China’s green energy goals.

The conference discussed various strategies to enhance the efficiency of hydropower and wind energy integration, emphasizing the need for innovative technological approaches. Experts suggested that rapid advancements in hydropower technology would be essential for meeting future energy demands while maintaining environmental standards.

In the context of China’s renewable energy landscape, the discussion also touched upon the necessity for a robust policy framework. Suggestions included the establishment of a comprehensive regulatory system to support the growth of renewable energy, including incentives for investments in hydropower and wind energy sectors.

As China continues to invest in sustainable energy solutions, experts agree that enhancing the synergy between different renewable sources will play a crucial role in achieving national energy objectives. The commitment to a cleaner energy future was reiterated throughout the discussions, with a focus on collaboration among governmental bodies, industry stakeholders, and research institutions.
