Recently, Huizhou Yiwei Lithium Energy Co., Ltd. has successfully completed the grid connection testing of its first large-capacity sodium-ion battery energy storage system at its facility in Jingmen, Hubei Province. This marks a significant milestone as it transitions into the commercial operation phase. This event represents a critical advancement for leading battery manufacturers in China regarding the industrial application of sodium-ion battery energy storage technology, providing essential support for the diversified development of energy storage technologies in new power systems.

This energy storage system has been entirely developed and designed in-house by Yiwei Lithium Energy. The core cell utilizes the company’s self-developed NF155L sodium-ion battery, achieving performance breakthroughs through its unique NFPP system. Public data indicates that this battery cell boasts five core advantages: a cycle life exceeding 30,000 cycles, significantly surpassing conventional lithium battery energy storage; a wide temperature adaptability range from -40°C to +60°C, meeting the energy storage needs in extreme cold regions and desert-type power stations; and performance indicators that are among the best in the domestic industry.

In the realm of green and low-carbon technology, this system demonstrates significant advantages. By optimizing the battery’s chemical system and eco-friendly manufacturing processes, its overall lifecycle carbon emissions are reduced by over 42% compared to similar lithium-ion batteries, aligning perfectly with the low-carbon development requirements of the energy storage industry under the “dual carbon” goals. Furthermore, multiple safety measures have been implemented at the system level: the generation of combustible gases under extreme conditions is significantly reduced, and combined with dual fire protection designs at the module and cabinet levels, risks of combustion and explosion are effectively mitigated. The system also supports 0% state of charge (SOC) for long-term storage, greatly enhancing operational safety.

“The operational integration of this 180kWh sodium-ion energy storage system is a key validation of technology transitioning from the laboratory to the market,” stated the project leader in an interview. The system achieves full-chain independent manufacturing from the cell to the cabinet, with 100% of core components produced in-house, allowing for direct adaptation to existing lithium battery production lines and laying the groundwork for rapid scale production.

Currently, lithium-ion batteries dominate China’s new energy storage market, accounting for 97% of the market share, while sodium-ion batteries, due to their later industrialization, represent less than 1%. The successful implementation of Yiwei Lithium Energy’s technology coincides with the critical period for implementing the “Special Action Plan for the Large-Scale Construction of New Energy Storage (2025-2027)”, which explicitly encourages the exploration of diverse technological routes. Industry analysts believe that the commercialization of this system will serve as a demonstration model for the application of sodium-ion batteries in large-scale energy storage and distributed power stations, accelerating the transformation of the energy storage industry from a “lithium-dominated” landscape to a “diversified and complementary” one.

As a leading company in the domestic energy storage battery sector, Yiwei Lithium Energy has already achieved full production operations for lithium batteries dedicated to energy storage. This breakthrough in sodium technology further enhances its “lithium + sodium” dual technology strategy, providing a dual safeguard against the challenges posed by the evolution of power battery technology and fluctuations in resource prices.
