EVE Energy Launches Commercial Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System with 30,000 Cycle Life

EVE

Recently, Huizhou Yiwei Lithium Energy Co., Ltd. completed the grid connection and debugging of its first large-capacity sodium-ion battery energy storage system at its base in Jingmen, Hubei Province, marking the official transition to commercial operation. This milestone event signifies a crucial advancement for China’s leading battery manufacturers in the industrial application of sodium-ion battery energy storage technology, providing significant support for the diversified development of energy storage technologies in new power systems.

The energy storage system has been entirely independently developed and designed by Yiwei Lithium Energy. The core cell utilizes the company’s self-developed NF155L sodium-ion battery, leveraging the unique NFPP system to achieve performance breakthroughs. Public data indicates that this battery cell boasts five core advantages: a cycle life exceeding 30,000 times, significantly surpassing conventional lithium battery energy storage; a wide temperature adaptability of -40°C to +60°C, capable of meeting the energy storage needs across various scenarios, including high-altitude and desert power stations; and leading performance metrics among domestic industry peers.

In the green and low-carbon sector, this technology demonstrates remarkable advantages. By optimizing the battery’s chemical system and environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes, its lifecycle carbon emissions are reduced by over 42% compared to similar lithium-ion batteries, aligning perfectly with the low-carbon development requirements of the energy storage industry under the “dual carbon” goals. At the system level, multiple safety defense lines have been established: the generation of combustible gases under extreme conditions is significantly reduced, combined with dual fire safety designs at both the pack and cabinet levels, effectively mitigating explosion risks. Furthermore, it supports 0% state of charge (SOC) for prolonged storage, greatly enhancing operational safety.

The project manager stated in an interview, “The grid operation of this 180kWh sodium-ion energy storage system is a key validation of technology moving from the laboratory to the market.” The system achieves full-chain independent manufacturing from cell to cabinet, with 100% of the core components produced in-house, directly adaptable to existing lithium battery production lines, laying the groundwork for rapid large-scale production.

Currently, lithium-ion batteries account for a staggering 97% of China’s new energy storage market, while sodium-ion batteries represent less than 1% due to their later industrialization. The deployment of Yiwei Lithium Energy’s technology coincides with the critical implementation phase of the New Energy Storage Scale Construction Special Action Plan (2025-2027), with policies explicitly encouraging exploration of diversified technological routes. Industry analysts believe that the commercial operation of this system will provide a demonstrative example for the application of sodium-ion batteries in large-scale storage and distributed power station scenarios, accelerating the transition of the energy storage industry from a “lithium-dominated” landscape to a “diverse and complementary” one.

As a leading domestic energy storage battery enterprise, Yiwei Lithium Energy has already achieved full production operation for energy storage-specific lithium batteries. The breakthrough in sodium battery technology further enhances its “lithium + sodium” dual technology layout, providing a dual guarantee against the challenges posed by the evolution of power battery technologies and fluctuations in resource prices.
