### European Sustainable Energy Week 2025: Clean and Affordable Energy in the EU

The European Sustainable Energy Week 2025 is scheduled to take place from June 10 to June 12, 2025, in Brussels and online. This event will gather prominent figures from the clean energy sector and high-level speakers to share ideas, collaborate, and contribute to shaping Europe’s sustainable energy future. It also serves as an opportunity to assess the European Commission’s recent initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainable and affordable energy.

In 2022, in response to disruptions in the global energy market, the Commission launched the REPowerEU initiative. This plan focuses on energy conservation, diversifying supply sources, and boosting clean energy production. Consequently, the EU has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian fossil fuels, with 47% of the EU’s electricity now generated from renewable sources.

That same year, the Commission proposed new regulations to ensure adequate gas supplies in the event of sudden disruptions. These new gas storage regulations guarantee that storage facilities in EU countries are sufficiently filled. Additionally, the EU Energy Platform facilitates collaboration among EU nations in global markets.

In 2023, the EU updated its Renewable Energy Directive, raising the binding renewable energy target for 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%. This adjustment will nearly double the current share of renewable energy within the EU.

A crucial aspect of securing affordable energy is diversifying supply routes. Since 2022, the Commission has formed new agreements with various international partners to import natural gas from a range of sources.

In 2025, the Commission introduced an affordable energy action plan aimed at reducing energy costs, completing the energy union, attracting investments, and enhancing preparedness for potential energy crises. This plan is projected to save €45 billion in 2025 alone, with anticipated savings increasing in subsequent years.

Lastly, for the 2024-2029 period, the Commission has prioritized clean and affordable energy as a key focus to enhance competitiveness. The Clean Industrial Deal is aligned with this objective, promoting decarbonization and lowering energy prices.
