European Sustainable Energy Week 2025: Clean and Affordable Energy in the EU

The European Sustainable Energy Week 2025 is scheduled to take place from June 10 to June 12, 2025, in Brussels and online. This event will gather influential figures from the clean energy sector alongside high-level speakers to share ideas, foster collaboration, and help shape the future of sustainable energy in Europe.

This occasion also serves as a moment to evaluate the European Commission’s recent initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable and affordable energy. In 2022, in response to disruptions in the global energy market, the Commission launched the REPowerEU plan, designed to save energy, diversify supply sources, and enhance clean energy production. As a result, the EU has reduced its reliance on Russian fossil fuels, with 47% of the EU’s electricity now generated from renewable sources.

In the same year, the Commission introduced new regulations to ensure adequate gas supplies during sudden disruptions. These regulations mandate that EU countries properly fill their gas storage facilities, while the EU Energy Platform facilitates collaboration among member states in global markets.

In 2023, the EU updated its Renewable Energy Directive, increasing the binding renewable energy target for 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%, effectively almost doubling the current share of renewables in the EU.

A crucial aspect of ensuring secure and affordable energy involves diversifying supply routes. Since 2022, the Commission has forged new agreements with several international partners to import natural gas from a variety of sources.

In 2025, the Commission will introduce the Affordable Energy Action Plan, which aims to reduce energy costs, finalize the energy union, attract investments, and enhance preparedness for potential energy crises. This plan is projected to save €45 billion in 2025 alone, with anticipated savings increasing in subsequent years.

Finally, for the 2024-2029 period, the Commission has identified clean and affordable energy as one of its primary priorities for enhancing competitiveness. The Clean Industrial Deal is instrumental in achieving this goal by promoting decarbonization and reducing energy prices.
