European Sustainable Energy Week 2025: Clean and Affordable Energy in the EU
The European Sustainable Energy Week 2025 will be held from June 10 to June 12, 2025, in Brussels and online. This event will bring together influential figures from the clean energy sector, as well as high-level speakers, to share ideas, collaborate, and contribute to shaping Europe’s sustainable energy future.
This week also serves as an opportunity to review the European Commission’s recent efforts to promote sustainable and affordable energy. In 2022, in response to disruptions in the global energy market, the Commission launched REPowerEU, a strategic plan designed to save energy, diversify supply sources, and enhance clean energy production. As a result, the EU has significantly reduced its reliance on Russian fossil fuels, with renewable sources now accounting for 47% of the EU’s electricity generation.
In the same year, the Commission proposed new regulations to ensure adequate gas supplies in the event of sudden disruptions. These regulations require EU member states to maintain well-stocked gas storage facilities, while the EU Energy Platform facilitates cooperation among member countries in global markets.
In 2023, the EU updated its Renewable Energy Directive, increasing the binding renewable energy target for 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%. This adjustment aims to nearly double the current share of renewables within the EU.
A crucial aspect of securing affordable energy is the diversification of supply routes. Since 2022, the Commission has forged new agreements with various international partners to import natural gas from a wider array of sources.
In 2025, the Commission will unveil the Affordable Energy Action Plan, aimed at reducing energy costs, completing the energy union, attracting investments, and enhancing preparedness for potential energy crises. This initiative is expected to save €45 billion in 2025 alone, with anticipated savings increasing in subsequent years.
Finally, for the period from 2024 to 2029, the Commission has identified clean and affordable energy as a primary priority to enhance competitiveness. The Clean Industrial Deal will further support this objective by promoting decarbonization and reducing energy prices.
