EST-Floattech Expands Octopus Series Portfolio with New LFP Battery Modules
June 27, 2025

EST-Floattech, a prominent Dutch provider of energy storage systems for maritime and industrial applications, is excited to announce the expansion of its Octopus Series with the launch of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery modules. This new development responds to the growing market demand for battery systems utilizing a different chemical configuration. The Octopus LFP Energy Storage System (ESS) is designed for large-scale reliability and robustness, seamlessly integrating with the established Octopus Series Battery Management System.

### New Chemistry for a Variety of Applications

The newly introduced LFP modules capitalize on significant advancements made in recent years, particularly in energy density and cost per kilowatt-hour. Equipped with the latest innovations in lithium iron phosphate chemistry, the Octopus LFP modules provide exceptional thermal stability, increased lifecycle performance, and improved safety. With expected long cycle lifetimes, these modules are perfectly suited for vessels that discharge during the day and recharge overnight. Each module offers a nominal voltage of 52V, a capacity of 233Ah, and is designed for scalable integration into larger battery systems with multiple megawatt-hours. The modular rack design is flexible in both height and width and features integrated ventilation for optimal thermal performance. Opting for air cooling presents advantages over liquid cooling, such as eliminating leakage risks, reducing maintenance needs, and minimizing weight.

### Proven Battery Management System

The LFP modules are an integral part of the Octopus Series and its agnostic platform. As such, the battery system will be fully compatible with the Octopus Series Battery Management System (BMS), developed by EST-Floattech’s engineering team in the Netherlands, drawing on 15 years of experience. The BMS ensures seamless communication, precise thermal and power management, and real-time diagnostics, enabling optimized performance, operational safety, and compliance with rigorous maritime classification and cybersecurity standards.

“By introducing LFP to our Octopus Series, we empower shipbuilders and operators with even more choices,” states Mark Witjens, CEO of EST-Floattech. “We recognize that different vessels have varying energy profiles. LFP allows us to cater to applications demanding high energy capacity and long discharge and charge cycles with a robust, safe, and cost-effective solution—without compromising our commitment to reliability and quality. The development of LFP is a logical step for EST-Floattech to meet the increasing demand for diverse chemistries from shipyards and shipowners.”

### Safe by Design Mentality

The Octopus Series is renowned for its flexibility and reliability, holding type approvals from four major maritime classification societies. Adding LFP to this portfolio offers shipowners additional opportunities to optimize for specific application needs, whether it’s extending battery life, enhancing fleet sustainability, or implementing systems that adhere to the highest battery safety standards. EST-Floattech has set a roadmap for certifying the LFP module with various classification societies by early next year.

“Our engineers have ensured that the new LFP modules meet the same high standards we uphold throughout the Octopus Series,” states Diederick Stam, Technical Director at EST-Floattech. “This addition strengthens our capacity to support a wider range of vessel designs and hybrid propulsion systems, fostering cleaner and smarter shipping. Throughout the development process, we have consistently maintained our safe by design mentality.”

### 15 Years of Innovation

With the launch of this product, EST-Floattech celebrates its third jubilee, continuing to lead innovation in maritime energy storage. The introduction of LFP signifies a broader commitment to providing chemistry-independent, future-proof solutions that meet both operational and environmental objectives in the maritime sector.
