Energy Storage Association Established to Support UK Storage Market Growth

The Energy Storage Association (ESA) officially launched in Westminster on June 25, 2025, marking the establishment of the first trade body specifically dedicated to the energy storage sector in the UK. This organization aims to accelerate the adoption of energy storage technologies, which are crucial to the government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, projected to attract £25 billion in private investment over the next five years.

The ESA seeks to foster innovation, investment, and policies that will help unlock the full potential of storage solutions. It plans to represent all forms of energy storage used in homes, buildings, and energy grids. This includes, but is not limited to, electrical batteries, thermal storage, pumped hydro storage, and hydrogen-based storage derived from green hydrogen and green ammonia.

Among the founding members of the ESA are GivEnergy Limited, Sunsynk, Powervault, Octopus Energy, Keele University, and Durham University. The interim CEO of the organization, Jason Howlett, who is also the CEO of GivEnergy and a board advisor for solar manufacturer Solarport, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. Baroness Luciana Berger will chair the ESA and highlighted the importance of energy storage for achieving the UK’s net-zero goals. She stated, “Energy storage is not just critical for balancing and stabilizing a renewable-powered grid – it is also one of the biggest opportunities for investment, innovation, and leadership in the global transition to clean energy.”

UK’s energy minister, Michael Shanks, is set to deliver the keynote address at the upcoming Clean Power 2030 Summits, which will encompass the UK Solar Summit, the Wind Power Finance & Investment Summit, and the Green Hydrogen Summit. These summits are scheduled to take place in London on July 1-2, 2025.

The UK Solar Summit 2025 aims to bring together key stakeholders from various sectors to discuss solar energy’s evolving role in the UK energy mix, its support for national net-zero targets, and the challenges the sector faces. Attendees can expect insights into the latest market drivers, government policy developments, investment trends, and technological innovations influencing the future of solar energy in the UK.
