Energy Asia 2025 kicks off in Malaysia
————————————————–

Energy Asia 2025, a premier forum for thought leadership and business advocacy, focused on Asia’s crucial role in the global energy transition, commenced in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday. The event attracted over 4,000 delegates and 180 international speakers from 50 countries and territories to engage in discussions on the region’s energy transition.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the Asia-Pacific region accounted for half of the world’s energy consumption and 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. Despite these figures, many countries in the region, including eight out of the ten ASEAN member states, remain dedicated to climate goals such as achieving net-zero emissions and tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030. PM Anwar emphasized the necessity of establishing clear financial frameworks to attract investments in renewable energy, noting that Southeast Asia received only 2% of global clean energy funding last year, despite having significant potential—such as wind energy in Vietnam, hydropower in Laos, solar energy in Malaysia, and geothermal energy in Indonesia.

He called for modernization of regional power grids, pointing to ASEAN’s progress on the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) and Malaysia’s commitment to invest MYR43 billion ($10.1 billion) in grid upgrades, incorporating AI and battery storage technologies. The Prime Minister also warned that fossil fuels still dominate the global energy supply and urged for a fair energy transition that ensures vulnerable populations are not left behind. He stressed that energy security must also maintain social equity and universal access.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has developed a regional Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) roadmap, and Malaysia has recently passed the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025. The country is collaborating with over ten international partners to position CCS as both a decarbonization tool and a potential revenue stream, according to the Prime Minister.

Themed “Delivering Asia’s Energy Transition,” this three-day event features more than 50 strategic dialogues aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation in clean energy deployment, decarbonization, and sustainable economic growth.
