China’s solid-state battery technology is expected to achieve mass production within five years, according to recent industry reports. The advancements in solid-state batteries could significantly boost the market for electric vehicles (EVs) and related components.
The development of solid-state batteries promises enhanced safety, energy density, and longevity compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. By 2025, the automotive industry is projected to see substantial technological progress, particularly in intelligent manufacturing processes.
At the upcoming CIBF 2025 in Shenzhen, the focus will be on solid-state battery production and technology advancements. Compared to liquid electrolyte batteries, solid-state batteries are anticipated to have a higher energy density, with a theoretical limit of around 500 Wh/kg compared to the 350 Wh/kg typical for lithium-ion batteries.
Despite the rapid advancements, challenges remain, including the high production costs associated with solid-state battery manufacturing, which currently can reach up to 5 USD/Wh. However, recent developments in manufacturing techniques are expected to lower these costs significantly.
Leading manufacturers have begun to ramp up production capabilities, with the goal of reaching a total output of 1000 GWh by 2035. Solid-state batteries are projected to capture approximately 41% of the market share by that year, while traditional lithium-ion batteries could hold around 33%.
In terms of application, solid-state batteries are increasingly seen as a viable option for high-performance electric vehicles, with energy densities reaching 400 Wh/kg and ranges extending to 1500 km by 2025.
Furthermore, major automotive manufacturers are making strides in solid-state battery technology, with new models anticipated to incorporate these advancements. Companies are also exploring the integration of solid and liquid electrolyte systems to enhance battery performance.
By 2025, it is expected that solid-state battery production will significantly increase, with a focus on both consumer and commercial vehicles. The goal is to ensure that solid-state batteries become a cornerstone of future electric vehicle technology, with potential applications in various sectors, including aerospace and marine transportation.
As the industry evolves, the focus will be on not only the technical advancements but also the scalability of production processes to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions.
