China’s New Energy Vehicle Subsidy Program Has Exceeded 10 Million Units
As of May 13, 2025, the Chinese government has approved over 10 million subsidy requests for new energy vehicles (NEVs). According to the latest data, on May 11, 2025, the total number of approved subsidy requests reached 3.225 million units. Among these, 1.035 million were for updated vehicles, and 2.19 million were for newly registered vehicles.
The NEV subsidy program has been instrumental in promoting the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and supporting the transition to green energy sources. The data indicates that from January to April 2025, the total number of newly registered NEVs was 691.8 thousand, reflecting a 9% increase compared to the same period last year.
In April alone, the number of NEVs sold reached 276.7 thousand, a substantial rise of 65% compared to the previous year. This growth has been driven by consumer demand for environmentally friendly vehicles, with the market share of new energy passenger cars hovering around 48.4%.
As for the sales of traditional fuel vehicles, they totaled 334.2 thousand units from January to April 2025, marking a 37% increase year-on-year. The government is keen on sustaining this growth trajectory, with initiatives aimed at enhancing the infrastructure for NEVs and promoting the circular economy.
