From October 8 to 10, the Eighth Global Science and Technology Innovation Conference (G-STIC) was held in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. The theme of the conference was “Technological Innovation for a Sustainable Future”. It was co-hosted by the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) from Belgium and the Guangzhou Institute of Energy from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with eight other international research institutions. Over two thousand representatives from government, business, and academia around the world attended the event.
During the conference, the Guangzhou Institute of Energy led the planning and organization of three energy-focused sessions, which included a general session on energy, a seminar on geothermal energy, and a workshop on biomass energy. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as technological innovation and collaborative system construction in the context of energy transition, as well as the integration of global experiences with local needs in Africa. The conference actively promoted regional cooperation and the process of sustainable development.
This was the first time the Global Science and Technology Innovation Conference was held in Africa, with the aim of exploring the unique potential and practical challenges faced by the continent in achieving its sustainable development goals. The conference sought to provide crucial technical support and collaborative pathways for accelerating the deployment of clean energy in Africa and fulfilling sustainable development objectives. It also served as an important platform for deepening cooperation between Chinese and African institutions and enterprises in the fields of green and low-carbon technologies.
