EIA Projects 2025 Will Be a Landmark Year for Utility-Scale Battery Installations in the U.S.

EIA

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) anticipates that 2025 will be a landmark year for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). According to their projections, there will be an almost 80% increase in installations compared to the previous year.

In 2024, the U.S. saw a record addition of 10.3 GW in utility-scale battery storage, and the EIA predicts an even more significant surge in 2025. They forecast that 18.2 GW of new utility-scale battery storage capacity will be integrated into the grid, marking a 77% rise from 2024.

Overall, the EIA estimates that the U.S. power grid will gain 63 GW of new utility-scale electric-generating capacity in 2025, which represents a nearly 30% increase from the 48.6 GW added in 2024. This prior year’s figure was the highest level of capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Notably, solar and battery storage will account for a substantial 81% of the expected capacity additions, with solar energy contributing over 50% of this growth.

In 2024, the U.S. grid welcomed a record 30 GW of utility-scale solar, which represented 61% of all new capacity. The EIA forecasts that this upward trend will persist, with 32.5 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity expected to be added in 2025. Texas and California are projected to lead these additions, contributing 11.6 GW and 2.9 GW, respectively.

Additionally, the EIA predicts a growth in wind capacity, with 7.7 GW expected to be added to the U.S. grid in 2025, up from only 5.1 GW in 2024, which was the lowest increase since 2014. The agency also notes that developers plan to construct 4.4 GW of new natural gas-fired capacity in the U.S. during 2025.
