Efficient Collaboration Across Multiple Segments Drives Growth in China’s Photovoltaic Industry

On September 18, during a press conference held by the State Council Information Office on the theme of “Completing the 14th Five-Year Plan with High Quality,” a representative from the Ministry of Science and Technology highlighted that, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China has continued to deepen the integration of technology and industry, achieving significant technological breakthroughs in areas such as new-generation information technology and renewable energy. This has led to robust growth in emerging industries, with the solar and wind energy sectors adding over 100 million kilowatts of installed capacity for four consecutive years.

Qu Fang, an investment advisor at Wanlian Securities Co., Ltd., stated in an interview with Security Daily that the remarkable achievements of China’s photovoltaic industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period are a result of the country’s emphasis on renewable energy development. This progress is also credited to the ongoing research and development investments made by leading photovoltaic enterprises, which continually drive industry upgrades. Furthermore, the well-established domestic supply chain allows the photovoltaic sector to achieve efficient collaboration in design, research and development, and manufacturing.

Chinese photovoltaic companies are consistently enhancing the efficiency of solar cells through technological innovation. At the 21st China Photovoltaic Academic Conference held in August, LONGi Green Energy announced that its perovskite/silicon tandem cells achieved a certified efficiency of 33% on large 260.9 cm2 commercial modules, setting a new global record for this size. The laboratory efficiency of similar cells in development has already surpassed 35%, showcasing immense commercial potential.

In collaboration with Nanjing University, Renshou Solar Energy (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. developed a fully perovskite tandem battery that achieved a steady-state certified efficiency of 26.2% on a 65 cm2 module, marking a significant step forward towards commercial application. According to a representative from LONGi Green Energy, “Tandem technology not only builds on the foundation of the silicon industry but also promotes synergy and technological accumulation within the perovskite, laser etching, and back contact technology systems.” This tandem technology enhances the economic viability of photovoltaic energy generation and opens up new possibilities for large ground-mounted power plants, distributed photovoltaic systems, and building-integrated applications.

Qi Haishen, CEO of Yingkou Jincheng Machinery Co., Ltd., believes that the main theme of the photovoltaic industry is to reduce costs and increase efficiency. This requires ongoing innovation in areas such as enhancing photoelectric conversion efficiency, lowering the cost per kilowatt-hour, and reducing material costs. Additionally, there should be a greater emphasis on innovation at the application end to provide robust application scenarios for the development of China’s photovoltaic industry. “With the construction of our ultra-high voltage power grid, as well as the integration of energy storage in photovoltaic plants and various application scenarios, the future installed capacity will continue to expand,” Qi further stated.
