e-STORAGE’s SolBank 3.0 Successfully Passes Large-Scale Fire Testing (LSFT)

The recent Large-Scale Fire Testing (LSFT) of e-STORAGE’s SolBank 3.0 energy storage system has yielded successful results, confirming that it meets essential fire safety standards. This testing demonstrated the system’s ability to contain thermal events within a single enclosure, thereby enhancing safety for utility-scale applications.

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) announced that its subsidiary, e-STORAGE, has achieved this significant milestone. The LSFT was conducted in accordance with the CSA C-800:25 §9.7 protocol, a stringent industry standard designed to assess the risk of fire propagation between adjacent battery energy storage systems (BESS) during a fully developed fire condition.

During the test, all doors, louvers, and structural components of the target units remained closed and intact. The protocol aligns with crucial safety objectives outlined in NFPA 855, which aim to prevent cascading thermal events and ensure that fires remain contained within a single unit. Notably, e-STORAGE’s SolBank 3.0 showed no fire spread to neighboring units, successfully passing the LSFT and affirming the effectiveness of its passive fire containment design.

The testing was independently verified by CSA Group and Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), a fire safety consulting firm. Josh Dinaburg, a Fire Test Specialist at CSA Group, remarked on the importance of this testing, stating, “Key stakeholders in the energy storage industry have raised justifiable concerns about the ability of BESS to limit the spread of fire between units without relying on complex extinguishing systems or putting first responders at risk. The e-STORAGE system demonstrated that an aggressive fire consuming all available fuel in one unit does not ignite new fires and spread to adjacent units. This is critical performance data for end-users, site managers, first responders, insurance adjusters, and the community where these systems may be installed.”

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, highlighted the significance of this achievement, saying, “Successfully completing the Large-Scale Fire Testing reinforces our high standard on system safety. At the same time, it positions e-STORAGE as a leader in delivering safe, scalable energy storage solutions across products, projects, and markets, demonstrating our commitment to exceeding industry standards for operational safety.”
