Dutch Saltwater Battery Innovation Wins 2025 European Sustainable Energy Awards
—
On June 10, 2025, at the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) awards ceremony in Brussels, AQUABATTERY, a company pioneering the commercialization of the world’s most sustainable, affordable, and scalable long-duration energy storage solution using saltwater, was honored with the 2025 European Sustainable Energy Award in the innovation category.
The project secured its top position through an online public vote, reflecting strong support for its innovative approach. Last November, with funding from the European Innovation Council and collaboration from five paying partners in the energy, housing, and commercial building sectors, AQUABATTERY launched a pilot project in Delft. This initiative involved testing the largest and most advanced saltwater flow battery ever constructed in Europe, aiming to gather critical insights that would expedite product development and achieve market readiness by 2026.
Jiajun Cen, co-founder and CEO of AQUABATTERY, stated, “By using table salt and water – abundant and environmentally friendly materials – we can eliminate Europe’s dependence on critical raw materials, avoid the environmental destruction caused by open-pit mining of lithium and rare earth elements, and mitigate the fire, toxicity, and explosion risks associated with conventional battery sites.”
AQUABATTERY was one of three finalists selected for the 2025 European Sustainable Energy Awards in the innovation category. This award honors exceptional ongoing or recently completed EU-funded projects that demonstrate a unique and innovative approach toward the clean energy transition. The other finalists included the LIFE4GREENBROADBAND project from Croatia, which focuses on reducing emissions in the telecom sector through cooling and solar power solutions at base stations, and the LIFE TURBINES project, which harnesses hydropower to generate electricity from excess pressure in domestic water supplies in Spain and Italy.
The European Sustainable Energy Awards celebrate remarkable individuals and projects for their contributions to innovation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. The nine finalists were chosen by a high-level jury across three categories: Innovation, Local Energy Action, and Woman in Energy, before being presented to the public for an online vote.
EUSEW 2025, the largest annual event dedicated to renewable energy and efficient energy use in Europe, took place from June 10-12 under the theme “Powering a Fair and Competitive Green Transition.” This event brought together public authorities, industry representatives, NGOs, and consumers to promote initiatives that accelerate decarbonization through green technologies, paving the way for a clean and equitable energy transition for both consumers and businesses.
