Collaboration Between State Grid Changzhou and Wujin to Establish Hydrogen Energy Microgrid Demonstration Zone

State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company has joined hands with Wujin District to establish a hydrogen energy microgrid demonstration area. This initiative was announced during the project launch meeting of the national key research and development program focused on hydrogen energy technology, specifically the key project on “Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell and Heat Pump Coupling Power-Steam Co-Generation Key Technologies.” The meeting was attended by district leaders including Yun Qicheng, Xu Jun, and Ye Qing, as well as Huang Qing, the general manager of State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company.

The collaboration involves prominent universities such as Tongji University and Southeast University, along with enterprises including Gree and Nari. Together, they aim to tackle four critical technologies: high-precision simulation and process optimization design for power-steam co-generation systems, fuel cell system integration control, and deep recovery of residual energy. The goal is to develop high-performance power-steam co-generation equipment and demonstrate its operation in a micro-energy network industrial setting, thereby filling a significant gap in hydrogen energy utilization within these systems and providing essential technical support for the construction of new power systems.

During the event, a cooperation framework agreement for the construction of the hydrogen energy microgrid demonstration area was signed between the Changzhou Xitaihu Technology Industrial Park and State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company. This project intends to carry out demonstration verification in the Changzhou Hydrogen Bay, establishing an integrated energy station that combines “electricity, hydrogen, and heat.” The demonstration project will feature a comprehensive energy management system at its core, utilizing flexible hydrogen sources and integrating a 1MW hydrogen fuel cell. This setup aims to improve the efficiency of comprehensive energy utilization while simultaneously producing high-temperature steam to meet the thermal needs of nearby enterprises. This is the first megawatt-level integrated energy system focused on industrial applications in the country.

Wujin District boasts excellent hydrogen energy resources. In 2024, the Changzhou Hydrogen Bay was successfully approved as a pilot area for the future industry gathering and development of hydrogen energy in Jiangsu Province. The park currently hosts over 40 enterprises within the hydrogen energy industrial chain, indicating the early formation of an industrial ecosystem. Moving forward, the district plans to continue coordinating the hydrogen energy industry’s planning and layout in the demonstration area. This includes formulating and implementing supporting policies, promoting the establishment of hydrogen production and storage infrastructure, leading the construction of an energy data sharing platform, and enhancing the collaborative mechanism for multi-energy complementarity to ensure the safety and stability of the park.
