CITIC Construction Investment: Domestic and International Energy Storage Demand Resonates, Leading the Sector into a New Cycle

On September 30, CITIC Construction Investment reported that provinces such as Hebei, Gansu, Ningxia, Shandong, and Inner Mongolia have implemented capacity pricing and compensation policies, which provide strong guaranteed returns for energy storage systems. Additionally, the entry of renewable energy into the market has significantly widened the price difference between peak and valley periods across various provinces. For instance, the increase in installed capacity of renewable energy in Shandong and Shanxi has resulted in a notable rise in the peak-valley price difference this year.

The combination of capacity pricing, compensation policies, and market-driven peak-valley arbitrage allows multiple energy storage projects in various provinces to achieve favorable economics, especially in Inner Mongolia. Moreover, calculations show that photovoltaic projects utilizing self-generated storage to shift electricity usage to high-price periods will demonstrate clear economic advantages. In regions facing consumption difficulties, self-generated storage is expected to become a prevalent trend.

Globally, the demand for energy storage has surged, driven by the increasing penetration of renewable energy and the declining costs of energy storage systems. This simultaneous growth in domestic and international energy storage demand is propelling the sector into a new cycle.
