Chongqing Unveils World’s First Direct-Cooling Immersed Energy Storage System at Smart Energy Forum

Chongqing

On September 24, the Chongqing Energy Storage and Smart Energy Industry Development Summit Forum was held in the Western (Chongqing) Science City. During the event, two groundbreaking products were launched: the world’s first direct cooling immersion energy storage system and a high-safety, large-capacity mobile energy storage system.

As the global energy structure transitions toward cleaner and low-carbon alternatives, and in light of domestic “dual carbon” goals, the fields of energy storage and smart energy have emerged as critical sectors for supporting the stable operation of new power systems. The development of their industrial chains has become essential for various regions aiming to secure a leading position in energy technology. With its strong industrial foundation in energy storage materials, equipment manufacturing, and system integration, Chongqing is accelerating its investment in this strategic emerging industry.

The direct cooling immersion energy storage system, developed in collaboration with Shell by Qing’an Energy, combines immersion safety and direct cooling efficiency. This innovative system reduces auxiliary energy consumption by 60%, enhances battery cycle life by 20%, and achieves an overall system energy efficiency of 89%. The temperature difference between the top and bottom of the cell can reach just 1°C, making it suitable for various applications requiring high safety, efficiency, and longevity, such as comprehensive energy supply stations, chemical plants, and office buildings.

The high-safety, large-capacity mobile energy storage system, jointly launched by the Chongqing Science City Urban Operation Group and Qing’an Energy, is characterized by its large capacity, versatility, high safety, and flexibility. It is ideal for construction sites, large events, and emergency rescue operations. “This high-safety mobile energy storage vehicle will provide more convenience and security for our daily lives,” said Li Desheng, founder and CEO of Qing’an Energy. “This ‘charging vehicle’ represents a dual drive of cost reduction and technological innovation, reflecting the leap of Chongqing’s energy storage industry from ‘manufacturing’ to ‘smart manufacturing.’”

Additionally, the Chongqing Energy Storage and Smart Energy Industry Technology Innovation Alliance officially released the “Chongqing Energy Storage and Smart Energy Industry Development White Paper 2025,” which outlines a comprehensive and independent industrial system design and planning for the energy storage and smart energy sectors, providing guidance for their high-quality development in Chongqing.

It is noteworthy that a cooperation signing ceremony was held, addressing key areas such as technology development, industrial empowerment upgrades, international market development, carbon footprint management, smart energy research, and equipment manufacturing. Among the agreements, Shell (Shanghai) Technology Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Qing’an Energy Co., Ltd. will focus on the development and application of key technologies for fully immersed energy storage systems. The Chongqing Industrial and Information Technology Development Center and the Chongqing Energy Storage and Smart Energy Industry Technology Innovation Alliance will aim to empower and upgrade the new energy storage industry by consolidating local industrial development efforts. QAES Europe GmbH and Team EDDA GmbH will collaborate on the joint development of the European new energy storage market, establishing a bridge for international market cooperation.

Several innovative achievements related to the energy storage and smart energy industries were also showcased, filling gaps in the field. These include the leading new energy high-safety, low-cost LNE360 semi-solid battery, Chainyu Technology’s ultra-wide power range AI smart bidirectional fast charging stack, the Mingyue Lake + Chongqing University high-safety, hourly-class magnesium-ion pouch battery, and the Chongqing University + Mingyue Lake multi-physical field control magnesium hydrogen storage technology. These key components and new technologies further enhance the collaborative innovation capability of the industry chain.

On this day, over a hundred top experts and scholars from the domestic energy sector, along with industry representatives, engaged in closed-door discussions on three core topics: “Core Technologies and Products for Large-Capacity Energy Storage,” “Key Technologies, Policies, and Business Models for Trading in a National Unified Electricity Market,” and “Future Application Scenarios such as Zero-Carbon Parks and Microgrids.” These discussions aimed to diagnose and provide strategies for the development of Chongqing’s energy storage and smart energy sectors, fostering a deep integration of energy storage and smart energy with urban development.
