At the recent Shanghai International Auto Show, CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, announced its development of a new fast-charging system capable of providing enough power for a vehicle to cover 520 kilometers after just 5 minutes of charging. By matching the charging time of traditional fuel vehicles, CATL appears to be addressing one of the main barriers to widespread electric vehicle adoption.
Prior to CATL’s announcement, another Chinese automotive battery maker, BYD, revealed similar advancements. In March of this year, BYD stated that its latest charging technology could deliver a range of 400 kilometers in just 5 minutes.
Despite increased efforts by the Trump administration to restrict Chinese companies from accessing cutting-edge technology, the innovations from CATL and BYD exemplify China’s continued lead in the electric vehicle sector. Currently, batteries produced by CATL account for over one-third of the global electric vehicle battery market.
