Charging for just 5 minutes provides a range of 520 kilometers: Chinese companies solidify their leading position in electric vehicle technology.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal on April 23, two of the world’s leading battery research and development companies are in a technological race to reduce the charging time for electric vehicles to just 5 minutes, comparable to the time it takes to refuel traditional gasoline cars. Notably, both of these technologically advanced companies are based in China. This development showcases China’s significant strength and highlights its enhanced global dominance in next-generation technologies, leaving the United States lagging in certain aspects.

The advancements in China’s electric vehicle battery technology represent just the latest achievement in the country’s ongoing quest for technological superiority. Previously, China has made notable breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and electric vehicles, which have astonished Western governments and underscored China’s ambition to establish itself as a global tech powerhouse.

This week, at the Shanghai Auto Show, CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, announced that it has developed a new rapid charging system capable of providing enough power for a vehicle to travel 520 kilometers in just 5 minutes. By reducing the charging time to be roughly equivalent to refueling a gasoline car, CATL appears to be eliminating a major barrier to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Prior to CATL’s announcement, another Chinese battery manufacturer, BYD, also revealed similar advancements. In March of this year, BYD stated that its latest charging technology could provide a range of 400 kilometers in just 5 minutes. Despite the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict Chinese firms’ access to cutting-edge technology, the innovations from CATL and BYD serve as the latest examples of China’s lead over the United States in the electric vehicle sector.

Currently, batteries produced by CATL account for more than one-third of the global market.

On April 23, at the 21st Shanghai International Auto Show, visitors observed CATL’s rapid charging battery display.
