In April, vehicle production in China reached a historic high, surpassing 1 million units for the first time. According to the latest data released by the China Automobile Industry Association (CAAM) on May 12, vehicle production for the first four months of this year totaled 10.175 million units, marking a year-on-year increase of 12.9%. Sales also rose to 10.06 million units, reflecting a 10.8% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth rates for production and sales during this period show an acceleration compared to January-March, which recorded increases of 1.6% and 0.4%, respectively.
“The overall performance of the vehicle market in April was strong, with production and sales seeing steady growth compared to the same period last year,” stated CAAM Secretary General, Xu Haidong. The production figures reflect a significant increase, with output surpassing 1 million units for the first time in April.
This growth aligns with the ongoing government policies aimed at stabilizing the market and encouraging consumption. As part of the economic recovery measures, there has been a focus on boosting the demand for vehicles, particularly in the face of challenges posed by international trade dynamics and a fluctuating export market.
In terms of vehicle categories, the passenger car market continued to perform well, with sales of 2.619 million units, representing an 8.9% increase, while commercial vehicles sold 2.59 million units, up 9.8% year-on-year. The share of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in total vehicle sales remained significant, accounting for 68.7% of the market. In April, NEV sales reached 1.251 million units, an increase of 43.8% compared to the same month last year.
During the first four months, NEV production totaled 4.429 million units, marking an impressive 48.3% growth, while sales reached 4.3 million units, with a year-on-year increase of 46.2%. The market share for NEVs is expected to continue rising as manufacturers ramp up production and introduce new models.
Looking ahead, the market is expected to navigate through various challenges, including fluctuating raw material prices and evolving consumer preferences. The policy environment will play a crucial role in sustaining growth, particularly as the government continues to prioritize electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development.
Overall, the vehicle market in April demonstrated robust performance, with production and sales figures indicating a positive trend. The continued support from government policies and increasing consumer demand for NEVs are likely to drive further growth in the coming months.
