China’s State Grid Corporation has officially connected the Gansu Zhangye Solar Power Project to the power grid. This development marks a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy efforts. At a press conference held on May 30, 2025, the State Grid Corporation announced that the project has successfully commenced operations.
Located in the Zhangye City of Gansu Province, the solar power project is designed to have a total capacity of 600 megawatts. It is expected to generate approximately 10.7 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually. This will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 87.1 million tons, contributing to the nation’s efforts to combat climate change.
The Zhangye Solar Power Project benefits from abundant solar resources and a favorable geographical environment, making it an ideal location for solar energy generation. The project is part of China’s broader strategy to increase the use of renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power.
As a major player in the renewable energy sector, the State Grid Corporation aims to enhance its operational capacity and integrate renewable energy into its portfolio. Following the completion of this project, the company plans to further develop other renewable energy initiatives, including offshore wind and hydropower projects.
Additionally, the Zhangye project will support the development of a green energy industry chain in the region, promoting sustainable economic growth. As part of its commitment to renewable energy, the Corporation is also exploring the potential for building energy storage facilities to enhance grid reliability and efficiency.
This initiative aligns with China’s goal to establish a low-carbon energy system and advance the development of a sustainable energy future. The success of the Zhangye Solar Power Project exemplifies the country’s dedication to expanding its renewable energy capabilities and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
