China’s State Grid Launches Advanced Control System for High-Voltage Renewable Energy Networks

China’s Electric Power Council Chairman Wu Shuangshun stated that the high ratio of new energy in China’s large power grid operation control system is a groundbreaking technology on a global scale, showcasing immense potential.

On May 22, during the fifth meeting of the IEC/SC8C working group on power system operation held in Xiamen, China, Wu emphasized the importance of the new energy large power grid operation control system. He noted that under the context of rapid energy transition, this innovative system offers effective solutions to potential challenges arising from fluctuations in renewable energy sources.

The new energy large power grid operation control system integrates three core technologies: large power grid electricity market simulation technology, multi-time scale optimization control, and advanced fault detection and diagnosis mechanisms. Wu believes this technology is crucial for ensuring stable and secure operation of power grids worldwide, facilitating the green transition of energy sources.

In recent years, the rapid advancement of energy transition technologies, particularly in renewable energy generation and direct current transmission, has significantly improved the stability and reliability of power systems. To ensure the stable integration of large-scale new energy into the grid, the State Grid Corporation of China has established and initiated a high-ratio new energy large power grid operation control system, positioning itself as a leader in the global energy sector.

The system is expected to encompass over 6,000 substations and hundreds of new energy generation stations, effectively addressing the challenges posed by the rapid increase in renewable energy capacity in China. Wu noted that the system will serve as the largest electric grid in the world to effectively manage the integration of new energy resources.

Wu further highlighted that the State Grid’s efforts in building a high-ratio new energy large power grid operation control system are not only a technological advancement but also a strategic move to ensure the stability and security of the national electricity grid.

As part of this initiative, the State Grid is committed to ongoing improvements and the development of sophisticated control systems, aiming to provide a robust framework for the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

The initiative’s launch comes as part of China’s broader strategy to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.
