China’s new energy vehicle subsidy application has exceeded 10 million units

As of May 12, the Ministry of Commerce has reported that since the implementation of the new energy vehicle subsidy policy in 2024, the total number of subsidy applications has surpassed 10 million units. According to statistics, as of May 11, 2025, the number of subsidy applications for new energy vehicles reached 3.225 million units, which includes 1.035 million for passenger cars and 2.19 million for commercial vehicles.
The new energy vehicle subsidy policy has effectively stimulated the growth of vehicle purchases, promoting a shift towards greener alternatives and resource recycling. The data indicates that from January to April, the national sales volume of passenger cars was 6.918 million units, marking an increase of 9% year-on-year. The sales of electric vehicles saw a slight rise of 1.9% during April.
Starting in 2025, it is projected that the market share of new energy vehicles will reach 53%. From January to April, the sales of new energy vehicles totaled 3.342 million units, reflecting a growth of 37%. The market penetration rate has reached 48.4%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2024.
During the same period, the total number of registered electric vehicles reached 2.767 million units, up by 65% year-on-year.
