China’s electric vehicle charging facilities have surpassed 20 million units

According to data released by the National Energy Administration on January 22, 2026, as of December 2025, the total number of electric vehicle charging facilities in China reached 20.09 million, marking a significant increase of 49.7% compared to the previous year. Among these, 4.717 million are public charging facilities, while 15.375 million are private charging units.

China has established the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network, supporting the demand for over 40 million new energy vehicles. The National Energy Administration has set a goal to continuously enhance the quality of charging facilities by 2025. The objectives include:

  1. Accelerating the construction of charging stations, achieving 100 million units by June 2024, and reaching 1 billion units by 2027.
  2. Improving the efficiency of charging facilities, aiming for a charging speed of 46.5 kWh, which is a 33% increase in efficiency.
  3. Expanding the coverage of charging facilities, with a target of constructing 7.15 million charging points along highways, covering over 98% of service areas.

By 2025, it is expected that the charging network will accommodate the increasing number of electric vehicles, with over 80 million electric cars projected to be on the roads.

In addition, the National Energy Administration plans to enhance the integration and management of charging facilities, aiming to streamline the installation process while meeting rising demands.

The report also highlighted the progress in the development of smart charging technologies, which will support seamless operation and management of the electric vehicle infrastructure.

As of January 22, 2026, China has constructed the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network, which is critical for supporting the country’s green energy transition and reducing carbon emissions.
