China’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Reaches 13.7 Million Units by March 2025

Announcement! The operational status of nationwide electric vehicle charging and swapping infrastructure as of March 2025 has been released.

Introduction: According to the latest data from the China Charging Alliance, as of March 2025, the total number of charging infrastructure units across the country reached 13.749 million, marking an increase of 47.6% year-on-year. From January to March 2025, the net increase in charging infrastructure was 930,000 units, which represents a year-on-year growth of 30.1%. Among these, the increase in public charging piles was 320,000, showing a significant rise of 75.3%, while the increase in privately built charging piles associated with vehicles was 610,000, up by 14.6%.

When comparing charging infrastructure to electric vehicles, as of March 2025, the domestic sales of new energy vehicles totaled 2.633 million, highlighting the rapid growth of both charging infrastructure and new energy vehicles. The ratio of charging piles to vehicles is currently 1:2.8.

Special Note: Public charging piles provide charging services for social vehicles (either fully or partially) and are constructed and operated for this purpose. Public charging piles are entirely dedicated to serving social vehicles. Dedicated charging piles cater to specific social vehicles. Shared private piles are built by individuals for their own vehicle charging needs but can also provide charging services to other vehicles (in light of the definition of public charging piles, shared private piles are classified separately). AC charging piles can be divided into single-phase (mainly 7kW) and three-phase (mainly 40kW); DC charging piles generally have a charging power of ≥60kW.
