China Unveils Plans to Boost Energy Storage Industry for Renewable Integration

China

China is set to enhance its energy storage manufacturing sector with new measures aimed at fostering growth and competitiveness. The Chinese government has defined this industry to encompass the production of energy storage solutions, information processing, safety control systems, and other products related to renewable energy storage.

An action plan released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, alongside seven other governmental agencies, seeks to position the energy storage industry as a global competitor by 2027. This plan emphasizes the need to refine existing technologies, particularly lithium batteries, while also promoting innovation in alternative energy storage methods.

To facilitate these advancements, China will initiate projects focused on accelerating research in energy storage. Furthermore, the country aims to enhance industrial coordination within the sector. Authorities believe that these initiatives will aid in integrating renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, into the national grid effectively.

According to Greenpeace East Asia, the development of energy storage technology is crucial for balancing electricity supply and demand in China. Currently, there exists a significant gap between the manufacturing capacity for energy storage and the actual demand on the grid, which this plan intends to address.

Some regions, including Guangdong, have already recognized energy storage as a strategic industry. As China’s largest regional economy, Guangdong has been investing in storage technologies to bolster its renewable energy initiatives.

China is actively pursuing various renewable energy projects. For instance, the Jiuquan Wind Power Base in Gansu Province boasts an installed capacity of approximately 10GW, while the Tengger Desert Solar Park in Ningxia has a capacity of 1.5GW. Additionally, the country is developing offshore wind farms along the eastern coastline, with projects in Jiangsu and Fujian provinces.

Beyond large-scale initiatives, China is also encouraging distributed renewable energy systems. The number of rooftop solar installations is rising in both urban and rural areas. Moreover, the country is exploring hydrogen energy storage through pilot projects aimed at diversifying its storage solutions.
