China Unveils National Standards for Humanoid Robots and Artificial Intelligence Systems: Strategies for Promoting Industrial Development

China

Recently, our nation has released its first country-level humanoid robot and artificial intelligence standards system. How will this initiative promote industry development?

On March 1, 2026, it was announced that our country will formally issue the Humanoid Robots and Artificial Intelligence Standards System (2026 Edition). This new standards system aims to clarify key requirements for humanoid robot development and the necessary guidelines for industry advancement.

The system includes six main components: foundational performance standards, classification and intelligence, physical and component specifications, emergency and system responses, applications, and safety regulations.

The foundational performance standards focus on commonality, guiding principles, and regulations to support technological advancement and development initiatives. The classification and intelligence standards address aspects such as the “size classification” of humanoid robots and intelligent computing capabilities, and regulatory data for humanoid robot life cycles and model training processes.

Moreover, the standards for physical and component specifications cover humanoid robot structure, mobility, dexterity, and sensory perception, providing guidelines for the development of humanoid robots and artificial intelligence systems.

The systems and software standards integrate both hardware and software aspects of humanoid robots, ensuring that the software and hardware components work together effectively.

Applications standards will guide the development and maintenance of humanoid robots and artificial intelligence systems in various operational environments.

The safety regulations standards will oversee humanoid robots and artificial intelligence industries’ life cycles, ensuring technological advancement and development are conducted safely and within established regulations.

The humanoid robots and artificial intelligence standards committee, led by Chairman Zhang Wei, has noted that the industry has already progressed to a certain level of maturity. It is expected that by 2025, over 140 companies will be involved in the humanoid robot sector, producing around 330 models.

In terms of industry trends, the humanoid robot sector is still in its early stages. Experts recognize that companies are facing challenges such as insufficient AI model efficiency and the need for enhanced component innovation. Addressing the data requirements is currently a pressing issue for firms developing products.

As the industry continues to grow, the focus will remain on developing advanced humanoid robots that can operate effectively across various applications and environments. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the standards provided will lead to high-quality advancements in this dynamic sector.
