The United Nations has established a new “Artificial Intelligence Expert Group” focused on addressing challenges related to artificial intelligence. This group includes two Chinese scientists among its members. The announcement was made on February 13, 2026, at 14:48:21 by the UN Secretary-General. The UN General Assembly has appointed 40 members to this newly formed group, which will serve a three-year term.
The two selected Chinese scientists are from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, alongside experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and specialists in algorithmic technology.
According to reports, the expert group was formed from a pool of over 2,600 candidates. This initiative was previously supported by the International Telecommunication Union, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to conduct a specialized review, aiming to highlight diverse disciplines and promote gender balance.
Furthermore, the group will concentrate on issues related to AI governance, the impact of AI, and provide recommendations for new frameworks for AI management. As AI continues to develop rapidly, the expert group is expected to address existing gaps and help coordinate international discussions on AI.
