The China Railway Shandong Bridge Group has successfully connected its 6.5 MW distributed photovoltaic power station to the grid, marking a significant step in the company’s journey towards establishing a zero-carbon factory. This initiative is expected to save over one million yuan in electricity costs annually and aims to evolve towards an integrated solar storage and charging model.
To tackle common challenges in green transformation, China Railway Shandong Bridge has innovatively adopted a Contract Energy Management (CEM) model. This collaboration allows the company to provide the rooftop space while professional partners handle the complete investment and construction of the photovoltaic station, enabling the company to start with zero investment and effectively overcome the high initial costs and technical barriers typically associated with green upgrades in traditional manufacturing.
Once operational, the project is expected to yield significant benefits, generating approximately 7.1 million kWh of electricity annually. This output can meet over 60% of the electricity demand for the company’s steel structure production workshop. Additionally, it is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 6,000 tons each year, which is equivalent to planting over 2,000 acres of trees. According to the agreement, all carbon reduction credits will belong to the company, laying the groundwork for its future participation in carbon market trading and the accumulation of “green electricity + carbon asset” management experience.
The photovoltaic power station is equipped with an intelligent management system that allows for real-time monitoring and smart operation and maintenance of the generation equipment. Currently, the system operates on a self-consumption and surplus electricity grid connection model, with plans to upgrade to an integrated solar storage and charging setup in the future. This will include the addition of energy storage solutions and the use of green electricity for heating, replacing gas boilers to further enhance cost efficiency.
China Railway Shandong Bridge’s innovative practices offer a replicable and scalable model for green transformation in the industry. By creatively utilizing idle resources, the company can embrace green change with lower thresholds and lighter burdens. Cao Dongwei, General Manager and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of China Railway Shandong Bridge, stated, “We will use the successful grid connection of this photovoltaic project as a starting point to continuously optimize our energy structure, steadily increase the proportion of green energy used, and explore deeper integration of green and intelligent transformation in manufacturing, contributing more ‘Shanqiao wisdom’ and ‘Shanqiao solutions’ to the green and intelligent development of the manufacturing sector.”
