China Launches First Major Hybrid Power Station with Over 5,000 Square Feet of Capacity

China

China’s first large-scale lithium-ion battery hybrid energy storage station has been put into operation: with an area equivalent to over 5 football fields.

On May 25, 2025, at 14:35, the new energy finance APP reported that China’s first large-scale lithium-ion battery hybrid energy storage station has successfully commenced operations. Recently, the State Grid Corporation of China announced the successful installation of a new energy storage station in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. As a major project of the State Grid, this facility integrates advanced lithium-ion battery energy storage systems and high-capacity direct current transmission technology.

Compared to current mainstream lithium-ion battery energy storage, this newly launched energy storage station utilizes lithium-ion battery technology with a cyclic lifespan and is designed to operate efficiently in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 45°C. It is intended to provide a robust energy storage solution for large-scale energy supply, thereby improving energy efficiency and stability.

The facility has a capacity of 400 MW, approximately equivalent to 50,000 tons (over 5 standard football fields), and is capable of adjusting the electricity supply by 5.8 billion kWh annually, meeting the electricity consumption demands of around 27 million households, with 98% of the energy sourced from renewable resources.

On a technical level, the energy storage station employs cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries with substantial storage capabilities, integrated with specialized energy flow changing devices. This combination allows for fast responses to changes in electricity demand and supports various operational modes including rapid charging and discharging.

The energy storage system is designed to efficiently respond to fluctuations in the electrical grid and can autonomously establish microgrids to ensure stable electricity supply, significantly enhancing the new energy power generation capabilities.

In the future, this technology is expected to be widely applied in regions such as Western China and Xinjiang, contributing to the stability of new energy sources and enhancing power supply reliability. The facility’s advanced energy storage system represents a significant step forward in energy technology, aligning with the growing demand for renewable energy solutions.

This project exemplifies the commitment to advancing energy storage technology, not just for local applications but as part of a larger strategy to enhance energy systems across the nation.
