China’s First Large-scale Lithium-ion Battery Hybrid Energy Storage Station Launched – New Scientific Network
On May 25, China officially launched its first large-scale lithium-ion battery hybrid energy storage station. This facility, located in the southern region of Jiangxi, demonstrates the country’s advancements in energy storage technology. The station utilizes a multi-type hybrid energy storage system, aiming to stabilize the integration of new energy sources into the power grid while promoting the development of China’s energy storage technology.
The Jiangxi Energy Storage Station is designed to implement various advanced storage technologies, including a “stationary energy storage system” and a “high-performance lithium-ion battery hybrid energy storage system.” By 2024, this station will be designated as a national energy storage pilot project, with construction expected to commence in October 2024, followed by grid connection in December 2024. Full operational capacity is targeted for March 2025, with testing and validation planned for May 2025.
To date, the station has achieved a 97% utilization rate for lithium-ion battery energy storage, while other storage technologies have not exceeded 1%. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, other technologies may not achieve a cycle life of over 2,000 cycles and have significant stability issues under varying temperatures, among other performance challenges.
The Jiangxi Energy Storage Station is expected to meet the growing demand for energy storage in China, especially in non-peak hours. This facility will be capable of adjusting to fluctuations in power demand, providing a reliable solution for energy storage.
The Jiangxi Energy Storage Station aims to support energy consumption in a sustainable manner, targeting an annual adjustable power capacity of 5.8 billion kWh, which is equivalent to the annual electricity needs of around 27 million households, with 98% sourced from green energy.
Moreover, the Jiangxi Energy Storage Station will utilize leading-edge lithium-ion battery technology and appropriate transformers for energy storage, enhancing the overall efficiency of the energy storage system. This new lithium battery system is intended to meet the demands of emerging energy power systems, optimizing power generation and consumption.
Conclusion: The establishment of the hybrid energy storage station marks a significant step in advancing energy storage technology in China. It reflects the nation’s commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
