China’s first large-scale lithium-ion battery hybrid energy storage station has begun operation, marking a significant advancement in the country’s energy transition efforts. As of May 25, the new hybrid energy storage station, located in Yunnan Province, has been officially launched. This station represents a major step in China’s commitment to renewable energy integration and hybrid energy storage technology, featuring a “one-stop operation” model aimed at furthering the development of innovative energy storage solutions.
The Yunnan energy storage station has been designed to employ multiple cutting-edge technologies, including a “lithium-ion battery energy storage system” and a “maximum energy density advanced direct current hybrid energy storage system,” among others. Currently, China has established several projects aimed at enhancing lithium-ion battery energy storage capabilities.
The lithium-ion battery energy storage capacity at this facility is substantial. However, it is important to note that lithium-ion batteries typically do not have a long cycle life and are often operated under temperature conditions that can fluctuate significantly. The facility is equipped to handle various performance challenges, such as energy density fluctuations and price volatility in the market.
Constructing hybrid energy storage stations can significantly reduce the capital costs associated with building traditional energy storage facilities. The latest advancements in energy generation and storage technologies allow these stations to effectively adjust to load fluctuations and meet demand efficiently.
The Yunnan energy storage station spans approximately 50 acres, equivalent to about five football fields, and has a capacity of up to 400 megawatt-hours. The station is designed to supply around 5.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is sufficient to meet the electricity needs of approximately 27 million residential users, with 98% of that energy coming from renewable sources.
This facility utilizes a world-leading large-capacity lithium-ion battery energy storage system, which includes equipment suitable for lithium battery power supply and transformation, enabling the station to effectively manage a wide range of energy storage tasks.
In the future, this energy storage system is expected to be applied in various regions across China, including the western provinces, the New Territories, and other areas requiring reliable energy supply solutions. The Yunnan energy storage station will continue to operate under a “standby + dispatch” model, adjusting energy output based on real-time electricity demand and supporting new energy generation projects.
The station aims to enhance the stability of energy supply and ensure that the energy storage system can efficiently respond to fluctuations in energy demand, providing a stable and reliable power source.
As China’s energy landscape evolves, the Yunnan energy storage facility represents a crucial step toward integrating new energy technologies and promoting sustainable energy practices, contributing significantly to the country’s overall energy strategy.
