China has recently made significant strides in its first high-speed offshore wind farm project. On April 29, 2025, the State Grid Corporation of China announced the successful trial operation of the power generation unit at the Jiangsu Province offshore wind farm, marking a major milestone in the country’s development of renewable energy.
This offshore wind farm, named “Jiangsu Offshore Wind Farm,” features a total installed capacity of 180 megawatts (MW) and comprises 110 megawatt-class wind turbines and an 18 MW/36 MW energy storage system. It is expected to generate approximately 300 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 240,000 tons each year.
The average wind speed at this offshore wind farm is projected to reach 5.2 meters per second, with maximum wind speeds exceeding 48 meters per second. The design incorporates advanced technologies to enhance stability and operational efficiency, ensuring resilience against extreme weather conditions.
The project employs a modular design approach with a “multi-pile + jacket” support structure, optimizing adaptability and strength. It has been engineered to withstand strong wind and wave impacts, providing a robust platform for sustainable energy generation.
The Jiangsu Offshore Wind Farm project was developed using a unique “floating platform division system,” which separates the marine spatial layout into upper and lower layers for power generation and aquatic habitat protection. This method aims to enhance the operational efficiency of marine resources and promote sustainable development.
Looking ahead, the project team has committed to ongoing improvements in marine energy development and resource management, contributing significantly to the national renewable energy agenda.
The completion of this wind farm aligns with China’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. As part of its broader strategy, the government continues to invest in innovative technologies and infrastructure for sustainable energy solutions.
This initiative is not only a step forward for China’s energy sector but also a significant move towards achieving global sustainability goals.
