China has built the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network. According to data released by the National Energy Administration on January 21, 2026, the total number of electric vehicle charging facilities in China is expected to reach 20.092 million by the end of December 2025, surpassing 20 million for the first time. Among these, there will be approximately 4.717 million public charging units and 15.375 million private charging units.
As of now, China has successfully established the largest electric vehicle charging network globally, supporting more than 40 million new energy vehicles’ charging demands.
By 2025, the country aims to further improve the quality of charging facilities. The key features of the ongoing development include: first, accelerating the pace of construction; since 2006, the number of charging stations has significantly increased, achieving a milestone of 1 million installations by June 2019 in just 13 years; reaching 1 million installations by June 2024 will take only 5 years, but the period from 1 million to 2 million installations will require 18 months.
The second focus is on enhancing charging efficiency. The total installed capacity of charging facilities in China should reach 46.5 gigawatts, representing a 33% increase in charging efficiency compared to previous years.
The third objective is to broaden the scope of charging facilities. The country is expected to construct around 7.15 million charging piles along highways, covering over 98% of the highway service areas, with 19 provinces realizing the goal of “rural highway charging.”
In September 2025, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration will jointly launch the “Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Service Capability – Three-Year Action Plan (2025-2027),” which aims to establish a target for the development of charging infrastructure.
According to the plan, by the end of 2027, approximately 28 million electric vehicle charging facilities will be built in China, providing over 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which will meet the charging demands of over 80 million electric vehicles, ensuring that the service capability for electric charging facilities is adequately supported.
China Daily reported on January 22, 2026, that the country has established the largest electric vehicle charging network in the world. As of December 2025, the total number of electric vehicle charging facilities in China is set to exceed 20.092 million, marking a significant milestone in the development of electric mobility.
The plan outlines that by the end of 2027, 28 million electric vehicle charging facilities will be built, providing over 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, capable of satisfying the charging needs of more than 80 million electric vehicles, thus establishing a solid foundation for service capacity in the sector.
On January 22, 2026, the National Energy Administration released details about the ongoing network improvements and the expansion of charging infrastructure. The focus is on enhancing the quality of service while ensuring efficiency and accessibility.
In summary, China’s efforts to create a robust electric vehicle charging network are evident through their substantial progress and ambitious plans for future expansion, which will be vital for supporting the growing electric vehicle market.
