As of now, there are 42 solar thermal power projects under construction or in the planning stages, with the latest developments being closely monitored.
Updated on October 8, 2025, at 19:57 – According to CSPPLAZA, as of September 18, 2025, a consortium has initiated the “Solar Thermal + Solar Photovoltaic” project, which signifies the progress of China’s seventh 100 MW class solar thermal power project.
The total installed capacity for solar thermal power in China has now reached 700 MW, indicating a significant increase compared to the previous year. Currently, the projects being implemented range from 40 MW and above, and there are ongoing construction efforts that are expected to contribute to a total capacity of 1 GW by 2025.
Among these 42 projects, the total installed capacity is approximately 5.5 GW, primarily located in the western regions, including 11 projects in Hainan, 4 in Jiangxi, 2 in Henan, 11 in Xinjiang, and 11 in Gansu, along with 3 in Tibet.
For more information about the current status of these projects, CSPPLAZA provides insights including:
- Hainan Province: 1 project
- Hainan Sea: Western Region project with direct supply capacity (1 MW)
- Projects from state-owned enterprises are being developed with limited liability, primarily located in Hainan Province, with a total capacity of 90 MW and 10 MW solar thermal.
As an update, several projects are progressing towards completion:
- By July 2025, the construction for the Solar Thermal plants is expected to be finished.
- As of September 10, 2025, the 100 MW solar thermal project has commenced operations.
- In total, 10 MW of solar thermal power is planned to be operational by the end of 2025.
For 2026, it is anticipated that the total installed capacity of solar thermal projects will reach approximately 1 GW.
In addition, there are plans for the establishment of a new solar thermal power plant with a capacity of 50 MW.
By the end of 2024, the projects are forecasted to generate around 10 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is sufficient to meet the electricity needs of about 50,000 households.
These solar thermal projects are vital for the future of renewable energy in China, with ongoing efforts to ensure their sustainability and efficiency.
