China Accelerates Mass Production of Industrial Humanoid Robots, Outpacing Hyundai’s Atlas Model

China

The production of industrial humanoid robots in China is accelerating, reportedly faster than Hyundai’s Atlas. The highly anticipated humanoid robot, powered by advanced AI technology, made its debut at CES 2026 in January, showcasing precise walking and delicate movements. This robot is primarily designed for production environments, with plans to deploy 30,000 units by 2028. In contrast, Chinese manufacturers are ramping up their mass production efforts at a quicker pace.

On February 4, DOBOT, a Chinese humanoid robot manufacturer, announced the completion of mass production and delivery of the third batch of their large industrial robot named “ATOM.” This marks the second delivery since the start of mass production. In addition to its smart capabilities, ATOM has been designed in compliance with industrial standards, including hardware selection, structural reinforcement, and thermal protection. The joint modules have undergone approximately 10,000 tests, and a real-time dynamic balance algorithm ensures rapid recovery of stability after impact, which is crucial for industries that suffer economic losses due to downtime.

Moreover, the design of ATOM actively incorporates robotic engineering experience gained from deploying over 100,000 collaborative robots worldwide. In terms of its applications, ATOM can interchange end-effectors for gripping, assembly, and inspection tasks, supporting multiple robots working collaboratively. These robots, deployed through an integrated platform, can operate in highly organized teams, handling complex tasks simultaneously, which is essential for flexible production lines and logistics operations.

The overall momentum of China’s humanoid robot industry is expected to continue its expansion for some time. However, there are differing opinions on whether, like China’s solar panels or electric vehicles, it can overcome its low-cost stigma and achieve global market success beyond domestic demand. Meanwhile, Hyundai’s Atlas is expected to complete its validation and operational phases this year and next, with a formal launch of its mass-produced humanoid robot set for 2028.
