China Accelerates Electric Vehicle Development with Launch of New Energy Cars and High-Speed Charging Stations

China

Electric vehicles, including electric trains and autonomous electric machines, are gaining significant momentum! The new energy vehicle sector is poised for continuous growth.

As of May 4, 2025, reports indicate that the launch of new energy vehicles will maintain a rapid pace, particularly in regions with high-speed rail services and extensive charging infrastructure.

Data from the National Electric Vehicle Network reveals that during the “Five One” period, which spans two days, the volume of electricity consumed by new energy vehicles is expected to reach 1.59 billion kilowatt-hours, marking a remarkable 28% increase compared to the same period in 2024, setting a new historical high.

In recent high-demand periods, especially during peak travel times, customers have shown a preference for new energy vehicles. The charging requirements have significantly risen as well. High-speed charging stations are crucial during these times, and the 47 charging stations that have opened recently are equipped to handle the increased demand, although they are currently operating under “satisfied” conditions without severe shortages.

By 2025, the country plans to accelerate the construction of charging stations, enhancing the capacity and efficiency of new energy vehicle infrastructure. The focus will be on expanding fast-charging networks and upgrading existing facilities to support the ever-growing fleet of new energy vehicles.

The expansion of the fast-charging infrastructure is essential for accommodating the anticipated surge in electric vehicle usage. Each day during the “Five One” period, a considerable number of vehicles are expected to utilize these charging facilities. To support this, the local electricity supply department is implementing plans to establish four 60-megawatt direct current charging stations and increase the number of charging stations by two additional 160-megawatt fast-charging units, which will increase capacity by 70%.

In Shenzhen, to manage the high traffic volumes, the local electricity supply department is prioritizing rapid charging station construction. By 2025, the aim is to build 50 fast-charging stations. Currently, Shenzhen has established a robust network of charging stations, ensuring that electric vehicle users have convenient access to charging facilities.

In Nanjing, the city’s rapid development of charging stations is part of a broader initiative to enhance electric vehicle infrastructure. The local electricity supply department has already established four fast-charging stations and twelve standard charging stations to meet the diverse needs of electric vehicle users.

Overall, during the initial days of the “Five One” period, the volume of electric vehicles has significantly increased compared to the same period in 2024. The local electricity supply department is committed to deepening the charging station network to ensure efficient service for the growing number of electric vehicle users.
