Tsinghua University’s Energy Storage Battery Capacity Challenges

Source: Beijing Daily, September 30

Recently, Tsinghua University’s School of Energy and Power Engineering has made significant strides in the development of battery technology. They have achieved breakthroughs in solid-state battery technology, which play a crucial role in advancing sustainable energy and safety measures in battery supply.

Solid-state batteries face a significant challenge known as the “interface problem.” This issue arises when there is a mismatch in the solid electrolyte with the high-voltage positive and strong negative electrodes, leading to potential safety risks such as interface instability, ionic conductivity limitations, and reduced battery performance.

The research team has introduced a new type of solid electrolyte that utilizes a “bidirectional ionic liquid electrolyte” design. This innovative approach aims to enhance battery safety and performance capabilities significantly.

Using this battery technology, the new solid electrolyte exhibits exceptional electrochemical properties, with each battery capable of storing 604 watt-hours per liter of energy. This figure has reached the target of 2 to 4 times higher than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Under optimal conditions, the batteries have undergone intensive testing and demonstrated outstanding safety performance. This achievement has already been showcased in publications such as Nature, contributing to advances in electric vehicles, electric aircraft, and humanoid robots, all of which require high safety standards and energy densities.
