Ningde Era Unveils World’s First 9MWh TENER Stack Energy Storage System
Munich, May 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On May 7, Ningde Era Technology (CATL) introduced the TENER Stack at the Battery Storage Exhibition in Munich, Germany. This is the world’s first mass-producible 9MWh ultra-large capacity energy storage system solution. The TENER Stack marks a breakthrough in system capacity, deployment flexibility, safety, and transportation efficiency, signaling a new era for large-scale energy storage technology.
Capacity Breakthrough and Cost Optimization
The TENER Stack utilizes CATL’s high-energy-density battery cells, which feature a five-year zero degradation characteristic. Compared to traditional 20-foot container systems, the TENER Stack increases volume utilization by 45% and energy density by 50%. With a single unit storage capacity of up to 9MWh, it can charge approximately 150 electric vehicles or power a typical German household for six years.
The large capacity of TENER Stack also creates significant economic value. Deploying 800MWh of storage capacity using TENER Stack requires nearly one-third fewer containers than traditional 6MWh systems, while improving land utilization efficiency by 40%, ultimately saving 20% on overall power station construction costs.
Overcoming Transportation Limitations
To comply with the 36-ton weight limit for road transport in multiple countries, CATL developed a “Two in One” modular design, ensuring that each half-height container remains below 36 tons, thus meeting transportation regulations in 99% of global markets. Additionally, the innovative split design accommodates various standard transportation methods, significantly reducing wait times and lowering special transport costs by 35%. Thanks to its lower center of gravity and enhanced flexibility, the TENER Stack can easily navigate bridges and rural roads, showcasing the advantages of its innovative structural design.
Upgraded Safety Standards
With increased attention on energy storage safety, the TENER Stack features a 40% improvement in gas sensor sensitivity, resulting in a 35% faster response time for suppression systems. Furthermore, the new three-layer insulation design enhances fire resistance to two hours, and the system complies with IEEE693 seismic standards, capable of withstanding a magnitude 9 earthquake and a category 5 hurricane.
As of the end of November last year, CATL’s energy storage systems have been deployed in over 1,700 projects worldwide, covering diverse climates and operational environments. The launch of TENER Stack will further assist CATL’s global partners in accelerating the energy transition, providing more power in a smaller footprint in a safe and sustainable manner.
“TENER Stack redefines industry benchmarks with its ultra-large capacity, flexible deployment, exceptional reliability, and silent operation,” said Zhao Zhongsong, CTO of CATL’s Energy Storage Division in Europe. “We are delivering not just energy storage products but globally applicable energy inclusive solutions. The 9MWh capacity is not the endpoint for capacity and space; every future breakthrough in energy density will unlock greater energy value in even smaller areas.”
