CATL Begins Mass Production of LFP Cells for Stationary Energy Storage

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has commenced mass production of a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell designed for stationary energy storage systems. This innovative 587 Ah cell has undergone a rigorous development and testing phase lasting three years. The primary objective was to enhance energy density while minimizing the number of components, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

### Reduced Components for Increased Efficiency

The new cell is specifically engineered for deployment in 20-foot containers equipped with 1,500-volt power converters. One of the key advantages of this new cell format is its ability to significantly decrease the number of battery modules and housings required. CATL estimates that the total number of system components will drop from 30,000 to just 18,000.

Additionally, the cell boasts a volumetric energy density of 434 watt-hours per liter and achieves a system efficiency of 96.5 percent. To further enhance its longevity, the cell incorporates electrochemical modifications, including a self-healing electrolyte, aimed at extending its service life.
