Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE Sets New Benchmark in Battery Fire Safety with SolBank 3.0

Canadian Solar Inc. has announced that its energy storage subsidiary, e-STORAGE, has successfully completed Large-Scale Fire Testing (LSFT) for its SolBank 3.0 system, showcasing its advanced fire safety performance for utility-scale applications. The tests were conducted under the CSA C-800:25 §9.7 protocol, and they confirmed SolBank 3.0’s capability to contain thermal events within a single enclosure, effectively preventing fire from spreading to adjacent units.

The passive fire containment design of the system ensured that all doors and structural elements remained intact throughout the testing process, in accordance with NFPA 855 safety standards. The results have been independently verified by the CSA Group and fire safety experts at Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), highlighting SolBank 3.0’s suitability for large-scale, safety-critical deployments.

Josh Dinaburg, a Fire Test Specialist at CSA Group, stated, “Key stakeholders in the energy storage industry have raised valid concerns regarding the ability of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to contain fire spread between units without relying on complex extinguishing systems or jeopardizing the safety of first responders. The e-STORAGE system demonstrated that a fire consuming all available fuel in one unit does not ignite new fires or spread to adjacent units. This is vital performance data for end-users, site managers, first responders, insurance adjusters, and the communities where these systems may be installed.”

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, added, “Successfully completing the Large-Scale Fire Testing reinforces our high standards for system safety. This achievement once again positions e-STORAGE as a leader in delivering safe, scalable energy storage solutions across products, projects, and markets. We remain committed to exceeding industry standards for operational safety.”
