BYD, the leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, plans to enhance its sales network in Japan by expanding the number of stores from over 60 to 100 by 2025. This initiative aims to create locations where customers can experience electric vehicles firsthand.

According to reports from Kyodo News, BYD currently operates more than 60 stores across 36 prefectures in Japan. Recently, the company opened a new store in Saitama, featuring its fourth model launched in Japan, the Sea Lion 07, a sports utility vehicle.

BYD's President in Japan, Liu Xueliang, expressed confidence in achieving the goal of increasing store numbers and emphasized the desire to create points of sale that allow customers to experience electric vehicles. This year, BYD is set to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles to the Japanese market for the first time.

Japan currently lacks sufficient charging facilities exclusively for electric vehicles. Liu noted that plug-in hybrids could provide consumers with more options by allowing them to charge at home. Furthermore, he indicated that BYD intends to strengthen its production system in collaboration with local partners in Southeast Asia, including Thailand.

Despite the uncertainties in the market caused by policies from former U.S. President Donald Trump, Liu believes that the long-term trend of restructuring the energy landscape brought about by electric vehicles will remain unchanged.

In 2024, BYD is projected to achieve global vehicle sales of 4.27 million units, surpassing that of Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan. The company's revenue is expected to exceed $100 billion, outpacing American electric vehicle giant Tesla.

Amidst intense competition within the Chinese automotive sector and the ongoing U.S.-China tariff conflict, there is a pressing need for automakers to explore new markets.
