BYD Plans to Establish Electric Vehicle Battery Management and Recycling System in Indonesia
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced its intention to advance the management and recycling of retired electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia. This initiative is seen as a crucial aspect of enhancing the integrated battery industry ecosystem.
According to Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific Automotive Sales Division, this plan has been incorporated into the company’s overall development strategy, although its implementation will require further progress in supply chain layout and systematic planning.
During a meeting with representatives from Antara News Agency and various Indonesian media in Zhengzhou, China, on January 22, Liu indicated that BYD is working on creating a comprehensive ecosystem that covers the entire battery lifecycle in Indonesia. He emphasized that BYD has long prioritized battery recycling and reuse. Since its inception, the company has focused on battery operations while simultaneously developing relevant technologies and products, along with planning for the management and disposal of batteries at the end of their lifecycle.
In terms of specific strategies, BYD is prioritizing cascaded utilization as a key direction. For retired batteries that are no longer suited for use in electric vehicle power systems, the company plans to repurpose them for energy storage systems, thus extending their lifespan and maintaining their economic value.
Currently, BYD stated that the implementation of this plan in Indonesia is still in the research and evaluation phase. The company is systematically studying the supply chain structure and industrial channel layout in conjunction with the development needs of Indonesia’s new energy and battery industries, aiming to better support its local manufacturing operations.
Liu stressed that the company is not proposing a standalone solution, but rather a systematic approach that encompasses the entire process of battery production, cascaded utilization, and final recycling. Once the relevant plans are further refined and ready for implementation, BYD will release more detailed information to the public.
