BYD Blade and Fast-Charging Blade Batteries Pass 2025 National Standards Certification

BYD

On May 27, BYD officially announced that its self-developed Blade Battery and Fast Charging Blade Battery have successfully passed all tests of the national mandatory standard GB 38031-2025, titled “Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles.” The certification was awarded by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center. This milestone not only highlights BYD’s technological leadership in battery safety but also indicates that its products have already met the new standard requirements that will take effect on July 1, 2026, setting a new safety benchmark for the electric vehicle industry.

The newly released standard is referred to as the “strictest battery safety regulation ever.” Its core requirements include:

  • Upgraded Thermal Diffusion Testing: Batteries must achieve “no fire, no explosion” after thermal runaway, and smoke must not harm occupants;
  • Bottom Impact Protection: Introduction of a 30mm diameter impact head and a 150 joule energy impact test, requiring no leakage, shell rupture, or fire;
  • Fast Charging Cycle Safety: For batteries charged to 80% within 15 minutes, they must pass external short circuit tests after completing 300 fast charging cycles.

Both the Blade Battery and the Fast Charging Blade Battery performed exceptionally well in these tests. For instance, the Fast Charging Blade Battery had already passed a 400kN compression test before the new standard was released (well above the 100kN requirement) and demonstrated no rupture or electrolyte leakage during a scraping test at a speed of 70 km/h.

BYD’s breakthroughs in battery technology are not isolated events. Since choosing the lithium iron phosphate route in 2002, launching the Blade Battery in 2020, and introducing fast charging technology in 2025, its technological evolution has consistently focused on three core areas: safety, performance, and cost.

With the launch of the BYD Cloud Body Control System and the fifth generation DM hybrid technology, BYD is extending its technological edge from batteries to the intelligent vehicle sector. Its core battery products include two main series: the Blade Battery, which targets the mass market with a focus on safety, longevity, and low cost, and is compatible with the entire range of BYD models (such as Han, Tang, Yuan, etc.) as well as two-wheeled vehicles, promoting the widespread use of lithium iron phosphate technology. The Fast Charging Blade Battery is positioned for the high-end market, catering to consumer demands for “5-minute charging for a range of 400 km,” accelerating the development of a high-voltage fast charging ecosystem, and challenging the refueling experience of gasoline vehicles.

Through the technological evolution of the Blade Battery and the Fast Charging Blade Battery, BYD has established a comprehensive product matrix that covers both mainstream and high-end markets. The former reshapes industry benchmarks with safety and cost, while the latter sets the standard for the next generation of power batteries through fast charging innovations, collectively reinforcing BYD’s leadership in the global new energy vehicle arena.

The successful certification of both batteries against the new standard is not only a testament to BYD’s commitment to the principle of “technology is king” but also a significant event marking the shift of China’s new energy vehicle industry from policy-driven to technology-driven.

In the future, major automakers and battery manufacturers will quickly follow suit, integrating the new standard for power batteries into their new products, which will significantly benefit the overall technological advancement of the new energy vehicle industry.
