BW ESS Celebrates Inauguration of the UK’s Largest Battery Energy Storage System
On February 18, 2025, BW ESS proudly announced the commissioning of its state-of-the-art 100MW / 331MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) located near Bramley, Hampshire. This groundbreaking facility is the largest of its kind to become operational in the UK, representing a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of BW Group, and attended by key stakeholders from the energy sector, including senior representatives from project partners like Sungrow and Shell Energy Europe Limited, as well as the Rt Hon Lord James Arbuthnot of Edrom, Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Grid Networks.
Bramley BESS is the first project in Europe to utilize Sungrow’s advanced PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled technology, making it one of the UK’s most versatile and longest-duration energy storage assets. This system plays a crucial role in balancing fluctuating electricity demand and intermittent supply, thereby facilitating the integration of more renewable energy into the grid. With its capacity, the Bramley facility can meet the average daily electricity needs of approximately 44,000 UK homes, contributing to reduced emissions, lower costs, and improved energy prices, all while enhancing the resilience of the energy system.
“This marks a pivotal moment for BW ESS in the UK, and it is an important project within the context of the UK’s energy transition,” stated Erik Strømsø, CEO of BW ESS. “Bramley is a cutting-edge, pioneering initiative that aligns with our mission to unlock the value of energy storage. I am thankful for the presence of so many peers and partners who joined us to celebrate this occasion.”
Richard Thwaites, Executive Director and Head of UK for BW ESS, added, “We are thrilled to witness the Bramley BESS achieving commercial operation. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our project team and the valuable collaboration with local communities and authorities throughout the development process.”
In 2024, BW ESS entered a seven-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe Limited for the Bramley BESS. This agreement is a market-first for a single battery energy storage asset in Europe, establishing a new revenue model for BESS projects.
“Shell Energy Europe is excited to be part of this project, which sets a new standard for innovative revenue models in the UK and European battery storage markets,” remarked Rupen Tanna, Head of Power at Shell Energy Europe Limited.
Shawn Shi, President of Sungrow Europe, expressed pride in the partnership, saying, “The Bramley BESS exemplifies our commitment to advancing clean energy solutions that support grid stability and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy future. With the PowerTitan 2.0 technology, we are establishing new benchmarks for efficiency, safety, and scalability, ensuring we meet the evolving needs of the UK and beyond.”
