Bulgaria Launches EU’s Largest Battery Storage Project with 500MWh Capacity

Bulgaria

On May 22, local time, Bulgaria’s Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov announced the launch of the largest battery energy storage system within the European Union, with a storage capacity of nearly 500 megawatt-hours (MWh). This facility, located in the Balkan Industrial Park in Lovech, central northern Bulgaria, consists of 111 containerized energy storage units and has an installed capacity of 124 megawatts (MW) / 496.2 MWh.

In his statement, Minister Stankov remarked, “This is the first step towards achieving Bulgaria’s goal of deploying 10,000 MWh of energy storage systems within a year.” Recently, Bulgaria has initiated a tender for additional energy storage projects, which is expected to result in an increase of 9,712.89 MWh in storage capacity.

The project was developed by Advance Green Energy AD, led by Bulgarian business magnates Kiril and Georgi Domushiev. During the launch ceremony, Georgi Domushiev highlighted that the project was completed and operational within just six months, expressing gratitude to the Lovech City Government for efficiently completing all necessary permit approvals.

Previously, the largest operational energy storage project in Bulgaria was the 25 MW / 55 MWh storage system commissioned last year by Renalfa IPP.
